Nasi Kerabu Kelantan from Jom Makeh

The dishes by Jom Maké taste so nostalgic, I felt like I was in a time warp. It’s quite a culinary experience as I haven’t come across these dishes yet. Familiar, yet foreign at the same time. It reminds me of the time when I was in Penang, trying all local food that are so delicious, yet simple.

It’s hard to find their dishes elsewhere as it is a recreation of local Kelantan dishes.

I tried their signature dishs ‘Nasi Kerabu Kelantan’ and ‘Roti Kirai Sumbat’. I must say both are utterly impressive.

Nasi Kerabu Kelantan

Originally from Kelantan, this traditional dish has the fragrance from exotic herbs and spices, long bean, salted egg, cucumber, toasted desiccated coconut, fish flesh (mackerel ), laksa leaves, basil, anchovy sauce, tender grilled chicken and butterfly pea rice. It’s a pass down family recipe. Jom Maké cook their rice with butterfly blue pea flower to get the gorgeous shade of blue. (No artificial food coloring used). You are supposed to pour the SUPER FLAVORFUL gravy (coconut cream, lemon grass, ginger, tumeric, garlic and dry chilli) over the rice and mix everything that is on the plate. The end product is a flavorful rice concoction, the gravy ties everything together!

The way to get the most out of this experience is to mix with your hands. The coconut cream of the gravy makes it so creamy and fragrant. This is traditional food at its finest form. The combination of texture and taste is well balanced.   It’s so delicious!

It’s a beautiful mess and please don’t hold back on spilling the fragrant curry onto the rice.

Roti Kirai Sumbat

Also known as Roti Jala in Malaysia. It is usually eaten with chicken/meat curry with gravy. However, Jom Maké  recreates it and stuffed minced curry chicken/beef in them. I must say this is incredibly delicious. The tender and soft crepe wraps the flavorful meat ingredients very nicely. It is similar to curry puff. You can have it on-the-go, a quick bite yet filling!

I really love this dish as the ingredients are so aromatic. The layer of delicate crepe pairs so well with the meat! Can I just say that the texture of the crepe-like skin is insanely tender! After trying this, you gonna miss the skin when you have curry puff. Each bite is packed with Jom Maké ‘s fragrant curry fillings

Chickpeas Chomé

I love chickpeas, as it is crunchy and have nutritional value. This comes in a 200ml jar, good for snacking! Jom Maké cooks them in different spices, dry chillies, curry leaves, onions & garlic to make it more flavourful.

The take of traditional cuisine by Jom Maké is incredibly well-executed. Truly well-done! I am so impressed by the taste and the complex flavors of the dishes.
